VGI core component development and V2G demonstration using CCS type 1 standard (KEPCO)

Summary

To develop a commercial level V2G system and demonstrate aggregated EV batteries as a flexibility resource of the Smart Grid, We developed commercial-grade components of smart managed charging (V1G) and bidirectional power transfer (V2G) and demonstrated them with general EV users. We implemented VGI charge control and management system for V1G and V2G with customer charge App, ISO/IEC15118-20 (draft) based bidirectional On-board Charger (OBC), and communication unit for mass production EV, AC, and DC V2G EV supply equipment (EVSE) using the CCS Type1 plug. The legacy charger was modified to support V1G control and communication. EV battery life degradation effect due to V1G and V2G application and economics of business model was also studied. Key Outcomes: The developed V1G components are applied to more than 100 legacy EVs for V1G smart-managed charging demonstration from October 2020. The bidirectional OBC of, 10 kW charge and 5 kW discharge, is applied to the newly introduced IONIQ5 EV as a standard component. AC V2G EVSE with ISO15118-20 (draft) protocol was developed and used for the V2G demonstration program. It started in December 2021 with 20 EVSEs at KEPCO test-bed and the number will increase to 100 as individual IONIQ5 EV owners sign up for the program. This project will be the world’s 1st AC V2G system using CCS type 1 standard with mass production EV and EVSE.
